The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence

Thanks to all who joined us to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® on Thursday, October 16, 2009.

Please join us this year on Friday, October 15, 2010!

Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” Investors Group is challenging you all to literally walk one mile through downtown Moncton with us in women’s high-heeled shoes on Friday, October 15th at noon. It’s not an easy feat, and let’s be honest, it’s very difficult to talk about gender based violence, but this highly visible event will get the community talking and create much needed awareness.

Walk the Walk

This event is being held to educate the community to take action to prevent rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationship’s (CAAR) violence prevention efforts, and support services for victims.

For men, this event is a chance to show the women in your life that you understand first hand how difficult it can be to walk in their shoes. For women, we encourage you to register and walk as well, providing moral support, while at the same time helping to raise necessary funds for CAAR! Walk side by side in support of a future without violence.

C.A.A.R. is a non-profit organization representing many service providers (www.coalitionagainstabuse.com) whose members work directly or indirectly with victims and/or perpetrators of violence in relationships. Created in 1990, it attempts to improve awareness of and access to services to the victims and/or perpetrators of abuse through public education and lobbying activities.

At least one woman dies every week in Canada at the hands of a current or former spouse.  Since 1974, close to 90 New Brunswick women, plus a few related victims (children, mother or friend) have been killed by the women’s current or ex-partner.   The sentences handed out in these cases were atrocious! Silhouettes from the NB Silent Witness project will be on display during the event (www.silentwitness.ca).
